BIOGRAPHY

Welcome to the Dying Kingdom!

In the summer of 2003, in Brasília, Brazil, Marcus Valls and his childhood friend, David Athias, heavily influenced by Metallica’s work in Load and Reload albums, decided to form a band. They named the band FixXeR, based on the title of ReLoad’s last song. Their first song written was Dead Man’s Dance, which captured the spirit and essence of the style they wanted to explore. In 2004, drummer Pedro Assumpção, Valls’ high school friend, pursuing the same stylistic approach, joined the band. In 2005, with this trio working as an initial formation, and with fellow musicians filling the role of bass and another rhythm and lead guitar, the band started to record a demo tape, with the intention to promote their work and get some gigs at the local scene.

The songs recorded were Dead Man’s Dance, Dying Kingdom (later becoming Solitude) and Romance is Dead (later becoming Fear of Fear). Valls and Assumpção continued to write more songs that were intended for a future full-length album release. In the spring of 2006, Assumpção left FixXxeR to join Khallice, a progressive heavy metal band with considerable national recognition and expression. Later that year, alleging creative differences, Athias left FixXxeR to form a heavier groove oriented heavy metal band. All of that led to an inevitable FixXxeR breakup.

In 2010, Valls and Assumpção got together regularly to write more songs. Sociopath was the first song written in that period, followed by Last Day on Earth, Until the End and Anxious Heart, that would later become Same Old Song. They produced demo quality material, with simplistic guitar recording and midi synthesized drums. Despite of Dead Man’s Dance and Dying Kingdom, all other songs had no lyrics. Shortly after, Sociopath’s lyrics and vocal melodies were written. In 2011, Assumpção and Valls called XXL (Victor Hormidas), Athias’ friend, to home record some bass lines and ideas for their songs. Later that year, a long hiatus took place, with no significant work developed until the year of 2015.

In the winter of 2015, Valls read Metallica’s and Dave Mustaine’s biography, being left extremely excited to return work on the songs he and Assumpção had written. They both got in touch and decided to form Dying Kingdom, a band named after their own song, which was then renamed Solitude. In April 2015, Assumpção called XXL and arranged the drums recording, at XXL’s home studio. Later that year, Valls began recording his guitar tracks and XXL decided to join the band, recording the bass tracks. Many songs underwent changes in arrangements and structure during the recording sessions, such as Until the End and Same Old Song.

Until then, Valls and Assumpção didn’t focus on writing lyrics and vocal melodies, neither on who they would recruit as the lead singer. After the recordings of the drums, guitars and bass ended, Valls focused entirely on writing all the remaining lyrics and vocal melodies of all songs. His experience in working with art direction helped him tremendously in visualizing lyric themes and vocal melodies, since he had already conceptualized artwork for each individual song.

In 2016, Assumpção and Valls began the search for the lead vocalist. Many tryouts were made, with no satisfactory results. Valls, then, came across videos of singing performances of Marcos V, in the internet. The band immediately contacted V and later met him at his home studio. Valls and Assumpção asked V to record try out vocals for Solitude and Last Day on Earth, and were completely overwhelmed by V performance. V joined the band in the same day he sent back the try out vocals.

Later in 2016, Valls, Assumpção and V felt the need to reformulate the musical production approach and intensify the upcoming album pace of production, moving all the material from XXL's home studio to V's home studio, Record Mark Studio. This decision was extremely important, since the band had, then, full and unrestricted access to all material, drastically improving the production value of the album. XXL had a hard time keeping up with the rest of the band, due to personal demands. The band then decided to let XXL go.

Following the departure of XXL, V began the lead vocals recording sessions. At that time, Valls got in touch with his and Assumpção’s longtime friend, Tomaz Vital, and asked him to write additional orchestral arrangements to some songs. Tomaz is based in Campinas, SP, so all the work was done remotely. After completion of all recording sessions, the band split functions in the post production process.

V, for his expertise, was responsible for engineering, mixing and mastering the album. Assumpção oversaw the edition of all the instruments and vocals, and Valls was in charge of creating all the stylistic visual expression of the band, as well as producing and directing all V’s vocals recording sessions. Valls also additionally edited some instruments.

In 2017, the band got in touch with Renato Miranda and Diogo Caparelli, to assume the positions of bassist and rhythm and lead guitarist, respectively. In April 2018, the band shot the video clip of Solitude and in July 2018, Dying Kingdom finally released their debut album called “Solitude”.

Sociopath foi a primeira música escrita naquele período, seguida por Last Day On Earth, Until the End e Anxious Heart, que mais tarde se tornaria Same Old Song. Dead Man's Dance e Dying Kingdom eram as únicas músicas que possuíam letra.

Muitas músicas sofreram alterações nos arranjos e estrutura durante as sessões de gravação, como Until the End e Same Old Song.
